Our Approach

The Carpentry Behind Every Door

A door only works as well as what it is hung in. A good door in a worn, out-of-square frame will stick and rattle; a cheap door hung properly into a sound frame, with the right hardware, will open and close well for years. This page covers that underlying carpentry — the frame or lining, the threshold, the hanging itself, and the ironmongery — as its own service, separate from any particular style of door.

This is general wear-and-tear and renovation work: frames and linings that have reached the end of their life, thresholds that have rotted from years of weather, doors that have dropped on worn hinges, or an opening being upgraded as part of a wider renovation. It is not the same job as repairing a door or frame that has been forced in a break-in — if that is your situation, our burglary damage repairs page covers that specific work, or see our external door repairs page for general weathering and settlement damage to an existing frame.

We work across Berkshire, Surrey and South Buckinghamshire, as a team rather than one person covering everything, so a whole-house frame and door upgrade and a single threshold replacement are both scheduled properly. Every job starts with a free assessment visit.

What We Do

Frame, Lining, Threshold & Ironmongery Work

Frame & Lining Replacement

Where a frame or lining has worn out, rotted, or simply needs replacing as part of a wider renovation, we remove the old one and fit a new frame or lining into the existing opening — matched in timber species and profile to the rest of the house, or to a new specification if you are changing the look.

Door Hanging — New or Existing Frames

Hanging a new door is mostly about the frame it goes into. We hang doors into existing frames that are still sound, and into new frames and linings we have just fitted, planing and packing to tight, even gaps so the door swings and latches properly from day one.

Threshold Repair & Replacement

Thresholds take the most weather and foot traffic of any part of a door opening, and rot or wear out well before the frame around them. We repair or replace timber and composite thresholds, including the weatherbar and drainage detail where one is fitted, so the opening stays weathertight.

Ironmongery Fitting

Hinges, latches, locks, handles and closers — fitted or replaced to match the door and frame. A dropped door is very often a hinge problem rather than a frame problem, and we would rather adjust or replace a hinge than sell you work you do not need.

Architrave & Trim Matching

A new frame or lining usually means new architrave too. We match the profile already used elsewhere in the house wherever possible, so a single replaced opening does not look out of place next to the originals.

Multi-Opening & Whole-House Jobs

Where several openings need attention — a renovation, a property you have just bought, or simply several doors reaching the end of their life together — we schedule the work as one coordinated job rather than several separate visits, with one written quote covering all of it.

Scope

What We Leave to Other Specialists

  • We do not cover forced-entry or break-in damage on this page — a door or frame that has been forced needs our burglary damage repairs service, which deals with that specific damage and the frame strengthening that often follows it.
  • We do not fit FD30/FD60 fire-rated doorsets under this heading — see our fire doors page, since those require manufacturer-tested doorsets and fitting instructions specific to the rating.
  • We do not manufacture doors, frames or linings ourselves — we source them from trusted suppliers and fit them to a high standard, rather than running our own joinery workshop.

How It Works

From Assessment to Finished Opening

01

Assessment

A free site visit to look at the opening — the frame or lining condition, the threshold, and the hardware currently fitted.

02

Diagnose

We confirm whether the issue is the frame, the hinges, the door itself, or a combination — so the quote covers what actually needs doing.

03

Written Quote

A fixed, itemised quote covering the frame or lining, threshold, door hanging, and the hardware specified — agreed before any work starts.

04

Sourcing

We source the frame, lining, door and ironmongery matched to your property, or confirm existing materials are suitable to re-use.

05

Fitting & Finish

Frame or lining fitted, door hung to even, consistent gaps, threshold bedded in, and ironmongery adjusted so everything operates properly before we leave.

Pricing

What Affects the Cost of Frame, Lining & Threshold Work

We do not have an existing published price point for general frame, lining and threshold work, and the range genuinely is wide — a single hinge adjustment and a full-frame renovation of several openings are very different jobs. Rather than publish a figure that would not mean much either way, here is what actually drives the cost:

  • How many openings are involved — one door, or several across a renovation.
  • Whether the work is frame-only, a full re-hang, or a complete frame-and-door replacement.
  • The threshold specification — timber, composite, or aluminium, and whether a weatherbar or drainage detail is needed.
  • The ironmongery specification — standard hinges and a latch, versus a heavier handle set, multi-point lock or closer.
  • Whether matching architrave or trim needs replacing alongside the frame.

Every job starts with a free assessment visit, followed by a fixed, itemised written quote covering the frame or lining, threshold, door hanging, and the hardware specified — so you know exactly what you are paying for before anything is ordered.

Common Questions

Door Frames, Linings & Thresholds — FAQs

Is this the right page if my door frame was damaged in a break-in?

Not quite — this page covers general frame, lining and threshold work from wear, rot or renovation. If your door or frame was forced or damaged during a break-in, our burglary damage repairs page covers that specific work, including keep and frame splicing and lock replacement.

Do you replace the whole frame, or can you repair just part of it?

It depends on the condition. Where only a section is affected — a rotted threshold, a split area around a hinge — we can often repair or splice in just that section. Where the frame or lining has failed more generally, or you are renovating the opening anyway, full replacement is usually the better long-term answer. We will tell you honestly which applies once we have assessed it.

Can you hang a new door into my existing frame?

Yes, provided the existing frame is sound and square. We check the opening first — if the frame has moved or is out of square, we will say so and discuss whether a new frame or lining would give a better, longer-lasting result than hanging into a compromised one.

What is a "lining" and how is it different from a frame?

A lining is the internal timber surround fitted into a stud or masonry opening that an internal door is hung into — it is not structural in the way an external frame is. An external door frame is typically a heavier, weather-resisting structural surround. We work with both, and will use whichever term applies to your specific job.

Why has my door started dropping or sticking?

Most commonly it is the hinges — worn hinge pins, a loose hinge screw, or a hinge that was never quite right for the weight of the door. Less often it is the frame itself moving slightly, or a swollen door from moisture. We diagnose which it is during the assessment visit rather than guessing, since the fix is very different depending on the cause.

Do you fit composite as well as timber thresholds?

Yes. We fit timber thresholds to match an existing timber frame, and composite or aluminium thresholds where a more weather-resistant, lower-maintenance option suits the opening better — we will recommend whichever fits your situation and budget.

How much does frame, lining or threshold work cost?

This varies too much by opening — whether it is frame-only or a full re-hang, the hardware specified, and how many openings are involved — for us to publish a single figure. Every job starts with a free assessment visit, followed by a fixed, itemised written quote, so you know the exact cost before anything is ordered.

Do you cover areas outside Berkshire, such as Gerrards Cross?

Yes. We work across Berkshire, Surrey and South Buckinghamshire, including Gerrards Cross and Stoke Poges. Call or send photos and we will confirm whether your postcode falls within our usual working area.
