Every job starts the same way, anywhere in Berkshire: a free measuring visit at a time that suits you. We measure the room properly — every wall, every reveal, ceiling heights, window and door positions — and check the things a plan drawing never shows: whether the floor is level, whether the walls are plumb, where the stopcock, gas run, and consumer unit actually are, and whether the units you are ordering will physically get through the house. If you already have a retailer's design, we check it against the real room, because retailer surveys miss things and it is far cheaper to catch a clash on paper than on day three.

Within two working days you get a fixed written quote, itemised line by line: rip-out and disposal, first-fix alterations, unit installation, worktops, appliance fitting, sub-trade work, and finishing. Fixed means fixed — it is not a day rate that drifts, and it is not an estimate that gets revised once the units are in. If you change the scope mid-job, the change is priced and agreed in writing before any extra work starts. If we uncover something genuinely unforeseeable behind the old kitchen, you get the same treatment: a written price for the remedy before we carry on, never a figure sprung on you at handover.

There is no charge and no obligation at any stage. Plenty of people use the visit to sanity-check a retailer's plan before ordering — we are happy to be used that way, because kitchens measured properly at the start go in cleanly at the end.

The phrase gets used loosely, so here is what it means in practice on our jobs. Carcasses are levelled and lined through as one run before anything is fixed — laser-checked, packed where the floor falls away, and fixed back to solid ground in the wall, not just to plasterboard. End panels, plinths, and fillers are scribed to the wall and floor they actually meet. Berkshire walls are rarely straight; scribing is the difference between a shadow-tight junction and a bead of silicone doing a job it was never meant to do.

Worktops are dry-fitted before final fixing. Laminate joints are cut with proper jointing bolts and sealed; timber tops are oiled on every face including the underside; stone and quartz are templated only after the base run is dead level, so the templater measures the kitchen as it will actually sit. Appliance housings are built to the manufacturer's ventilation and clearance specs — the detail that gets skipped most often, and the one that shortens an oven's life when it is. Sink and hob cut-outs are sealed against moisture, because chipboard that drinks water swells, and a swollen worktop edge two winters in is a fitting failure, not bad luck.

We use moisture-resistant boards in wet areas, fit soft-close hinges and runners as standard where the range allows, and finish with a full adjustment pass: every door aligned, every drawer front gapped evenly, every handle level. Silicone goes on last, in clean unbroken lines, where it belongs — around sinks and worktops — not as a cover for short cuts.

None of this shows up in a brochure photograph, and most of it is invisible on handover day too — a badly fixed carcass and a well-fixed one look identical until the first winter, when damp plasterboard, a sagging wall unit, or a worktop joint that has opened up tells you which one you got. Finishing to a carpenter's standard means the difference only becomes visible five or ten years down the line, by which point it has stopped being a fitting question and started being a question of whether the kitchen was worth what you paid for it.

A handful of briefs account for most of the calls we take, whichever Berkshire town they come from. The single most common is a straightforward labour-only replacement: the old kitchen is tired, the homeowner has already chosen a Howdens, Wren, or IKEA design, and what they need is someone to strip out the old units and fit the new ones properly. Close behind is the open-plan knock-through — a wall between kitchen and dining room, or kitchen and reception, comes down as part of a wider renovation, and the kitchen has to be set out and levelled across a floor that is rarely the same height on both sides of where the wall used to be.

Developer-spec upgrades are a growing share of the work, particularly in the newer estates around Bracknell, Wokingham, and Maidenhead — a kitchen fitted by the builder several years ago that was never a great standard to begin with, replaced with something the homeowner actually chose. At the other end, premium supply-and-fit projects in Ascot, Sunningdale, Virginia Water, Gerrards Cross, and Stoke Poges bring German cabinetry, integrated appliance suites, and bespoke joinery elements such as larder units and butler's pantries built alongside the main kitchen.

Smaller jobs matter too, and we take them on the same terms: a worktop-only replacement where the units stay but the surface has had enough, an appliance swap that needs a housing altered to fit a new oven or hob, or a single run of bespoke shelving to finish off a kitchen that was fitted by someone else.
