Our Approach

Storage Built to Fit Your Space Exactly

Looking for bespoke storage solutions in Ascot, Bracknell or anywhere across Berkshire? We design and build fitted storage units to fit every space exactly — alcove shelving and cupboards, home offices, window seats, and under-stair storage.

The most useful storage in any home is the storage that was designed for that specific space. The alcove unit that fills the full recess beside the chimney breast, top shelf to skirting board. The under-stairs cupboard lined to use every inch of the awkward triangular space. The home office built into a spare room so that the desk, shelving, and storage all work together as a single system rather than a collection of separate pieces.

Bespoke built-in storage solves problems that off-the-shelf furniture cannot. Alcoves in Victorian properties are almost never standard widths — each one is a slightly different size, and a unit that almost fits an alcove looks worse than no unit at all. Under-stair spaces have sloped ceilings and irregular floor plans that no flat-pack unit addresses. Window seat bays have a specific depth and width that is never quite what a catalogue assumes. Bespoke means designed for what is actually there.

We work in painted MDF, solid timber, and veneered board. LED lighting, soft-close hinges and drawer runners, and adjustable shelving are all available and commonly included. Every project begins with a free measuring visit where we discuss what you store, how you use the room, and what the result should look like — then we design around those answers.

What We Build

Types of Bespoke Storage We Install

Alcove Units and Shelving

The most popular bespoke storage job we do. Fitted units in the alcoves either side of a chimney breast — typically open shelving above and cupboard doors below, with LED strip lighting in the shelving niches. We build each unit to its exact alcove dimensions so there are no gaps at the sides or top. Both units are matched in style and shelf height even if the alcoves are different widths.

Built-In Home Office

A dedicated home office built into a spare bedroom or study transforms how the room works. We design the layout around your actual setup — monitor position and cable management, keyboard tray if required, filing drawers, overhead shelving, and any printer or scanner housing. The result is a workspace that is organised, functional, and looks as if it belongs in the room.

Window Seat with Storage

A window seat with a lift-up lid and deep storage box is one of the most useful additions to a bay window. We build the base unit to sit level against the floor and flush against the window reveal, fit a hinged lid with soft-close struts, and upholster or leave it ready for a made-to-measure cushion. The internal storage space is deeper than most people expect.

Under-Stair Cupboard

Under-stair spaces are almost universally under-used. We measure the full space — including the sloped ceiling and the awkward corner at the back — and build shelving and hanging rails that make the whole area genuinely useful. The door frame and door are also replaced or refitted if the existing ones are poor quality.

Boot Room and Hallway Storage

A fitted hallway or boot room — coat hooks, shoe storage, a bench seat, and overhead shelving all in one integrated unit — makes the entrance to a home functional and ordered. We design around the specific wall dimensions and door positions to make the most of a space that is usually narrow and complicated.

Utility Room Cabinetry

Utility rooms benefit enormously from built-in cabinetry. We design storage to house appliances, cleaning products, and household items in a way that makes the room easy to use. Units are built to the full height of the room and around any existing plumbing, creating a clean and practical space from what is often a poorly organised room.

Materials

What We Build From

Painted MDF is the most common choice for alcove units and built-in storage. It produces a clean, smooth finish in any colour, is dimensionally stable, and is cost-effective relative to solid timber. We use moisture-resistant MDF in areas prone to humidity — utility rooms, boot rooms, and spaces near external walls.

Solid oak or pine is the right choice when you want visible grain and a natural timber finish. A painted alcove unit and a solid oak alcove unit in the same room are very different objects — one is furniture, the other is joinery that feels like part of the building. We advise honestly on which suits your room and budget.

Hardware matters more than most clients expect. We use Blum drawer runners and soft-close hinges as standard — the kind that do not rattle, do not sag after a year, and do not require constant adjustment. Handles, knobs, and magnetic push catches are chosen alongside the design.

LED lighting is routed within the unit structure before shelves and panels go on. We position transformers in concealed service bays and use warm-white or daylight LEDs depending on the room and the client's preference.

Pricing

What Does Bespoke Storage Cost?

These are realistic ranges based on projects completed across Berkshire. All-in means design, materials, fitting, and painting.

Storage TypeTypical Range (all-in)
Single alcove unit (shelving + cupboard)£1,200 – £2,200
Pair of matching alcove units£2,200 – £3,800
Window seat with storage box£800 – £1,600
Under-stair cupboard full fit-out£900 – £1,800
Boot room / hallway storage unit£1,500 – £3,000
Built-in home office (desk + overhead + drawers)£3,000 – £6,500
LED lighting per unit (add)£150 – £400

Main cost drivers are size, material choice, number of shelves and drawers, and whether LED lighting is included. A simple painted MDF alcove unit with fixed shelves costs significantly less than a unit with adjustable shelving, soft-close drawer boxes, and integrated LED strips. The free measuring visit gives you a fixed price for exactly what you want.

Common Questions

Bespoke Storage — Frequently Asked Questions

How much do bespoke alcove units cost?

A single alcove unit with shelving above and a cupboard below typically costs £1,200–£2,200 all-in, including materials, fitting, and painting. A pair of matching alcove units runs £2,200–£3,800. A home office built-in starts from around £3,000 depending on the brief. We provide a fixed-price quote after the free measuring visit.

Can you add LED lighting inside the alcove units?

Yes. LED strip lighting inside shelving niches, under shelves, or inside cupboards is a popular addition. We route the wiring within the unit before the shelves go in, with a transformer in a concealed service bay. The result is lighting that looks built-in, not retrofitted.

What if the two alcoves are different sizes?

This is common in Victorian and Edwardian properties where chimney breasts are not perfectly centred. We measure both alcoves precisely and build each unit to its actual dimensions. The door styles and shelf heights are matched so the pair reads as a set from the front, even if the carcass widths differ slightly.

Can you do a mix of open shelving and closed cupboards?

Yes — and we usually recommend it. Open shelving above the dado height gives you display and accessible storage; closed cupboard doors below hide everyday clutter. We discuss the split at the measuring visit based on what you store and how the room is used.

Do you build home offices into spare bedrooms?

Yes. A built-in home office — desk, overhead storage, shelving, and drawer units all fitted to the room — is one of the most useful storage projects we do. We design the layout around your equipment, monitor setup, and filing requirements. Cable management is included.

Can you line an under-stairs cupboard?

Yes. We measure the full space including the sloped ceiling and build shelving and hanging that makes the whole area genuinely useful. Properly lined, most under-stair cupboards can house a vacuum, coats, shoes, and household storage in an organised way.

What materials do you use?

Painted MDF is the most popular choice — clean finish in any colour, dimensionally stable, cost-effective. Solid oak or pine is used where a natural timber finish is required. Blum drawer runners and soft-close hinges are standard.

Is painting included?

Yes. For painted MDF units, priming, undercoating, and two finish coats in your chosen colour are included in the quote. If you prefer your own decorator to paint after fitting, we leave the units primed and ready.
