Our Approach

Internal Doors Hung to Last

Looking for internal door supply and fitting in Ascot, Bracknell or anywhere across Berkshire? We hang every internal door to tight tolerances — solid timber, shaker, panel, glazed, or flush — single doors or whole-house replacements.

An internal door hanging looks straightforward. It is not. A door hung poorly — with inconsistent gaps, hinges that are not morticed flush, or a latch that does not engage cleanly — will drop, stick, or rattle within months. A door hung well runs smoothly, closes quietly, and stays that way for years without adjustment. The difference is in the precision of the work, and precision is not something that can be hurried.

We hang internal doors to tight tolerances: consistent 2mm gaps top and sides, latches that engage first time, hinges morticed flush so the door sits perfectly in the frame, and architraves mitred cleanly at the corners. It is unglamorous work, but when it is done badly the whole house feels slightly wrong, and when it is done well nobody thinks about the doors at all — which is exactly the point.

We can supply doors or hang doors you have purchased elsewhere. We work with solid timber, engineered core, and hollow-core doors depending on the application and budget. We also supply and fit architraves, door linings, and ironmongery as part of the job — so you receive a complete finished result, not a hung door that still needs trim.

Most of our internal door work in Berkshire is either a whole-house replacement during a renovation, or a single door replacement where the existing one has failed or does not match a recent design change. Both are within our scope, and both receive the same standard of installation.

What We Fit

Types of Internal Door We Supply and Hang

Panel Doors (2, 4, 6-panel)

The traditional internal door type for period properties. Two-panel doors suit Georgian and Regency interiors; four and six-panel doors are appropriate for Victorian, Edwardian, and Arts and Crafts properties. We source raised-and-fielded and flat-panel versions in solid oak, pine, or primed MDF. Where an exact match to existing doors is required, we advise on the closest available profile.

Shaker Doors

The shaker door — a simple recessed panel with a flat face and clean lines — works in contemporary interiors and in period properties where a clean, unfussy look is required. Available in solid timber and engineered core versions, painted or with a natural timber face. The most requested door style for new builds and renovated Victorian properties that have been given a modern interior.

Solid Timber Doors

A solid oak or solid pine door sounds and feels different from an engineered alternative — heavier, denser, with a more substantial close. For high-specification properties and period homes where the brief calls for solid timber throughout, we source and supply solid doors from quality suppliers and hang them with the same precision as any other installation.

Glazed Internal Doors

Glazed panels in an internal door allow light to pass between rooms — particularly useful in darker hallways where a solid door would block light from a rear reception room. Clear glass gives maximum light transmission; frosted or reeded glass allows light through while maintaining privacy. We advise on which glass type suits the specific location.

Flush Doors

A flush door — flat, no panels, no mouldings — suits contemporary and minimalist interiors where a clean wall-like surface is required. Available in painted MDF, timber veneer, or lacquered finishes. Often used in combination with concealed hinges and touch-latch hardware so the door disappears into the wall when closed.

Bi-Fold and Sliding Doors

Bi-fold doors allow a room divider to be fully opened back to the wall, creating an unobstructed opening between two spaces. Popular for connecting a living room to a dining room, or a kitchen to a garden room. We fit bi-fold sets on track systems with quality gear. Pocket doors (sliding into the wall) are also possible and assessed on a project-by-project basis.

Why It Matters

What a Poorly Fitted Door Actually Costs You

Most internal doors are not hung by specialist carpenters — they are hung by general builders during a renovation, or by the homeowner following an online guide. The result is usually functional, but rarely precise. Gaps that are slightly inconsistent. Hinges that are not fully morticed. A latch bolt that misses the keep by a millimetre and needs lifting to engage. A door that rubs on the frame in winter when the timber expands.

These are not catastrophic failures, but they compound. Over time, a door that was hung slightly out-of-plumb drops further as the hinge screws work loose. A frame that was not properly fixed moves with the seasonal timber movement of the house. The gap at the bottom, which was tight enough on day one, becomes a draught gap by year three.

We hang doors to tolerances that prevent this. The hinges are morticed fully flush so there is no stress on the screw fixings. The gaps are consistent and allow for seasonal movement without rubbing. The latch engages cleanly every time. Done this way, a well-hung door lasts as long as the house does.

What Does Internal Door Fitting Cost?

These figures include supply (where noted), fitting, architraves both sides, and ironmongery. They are based on recent work across Berkshire.

Door Type / ScopeTypical Range (all-in)
Single door hang (customer-supplied door)£180 – £320
Single door, supply and fit, primed MDF£350 – £550
Single door, supply and fit, solid oak£550 – £900
Full house, 8–10 doors, primed MDF + architraves£2,800 – £4,500
Full house, 8–10 doors, solid oak + architraves£4,500 – £7,500
Bi-fold door set, supply and fit£600 – £1,400
FD30 fire door, supply and fit£450 – £750

The main cost drivers are material spec (solid oak costs significantly more than primed MDF), whether existing frames need replacing, and the number of doors. A whole-house project is priced per door and usually represents better value than individual installations spread over time.

Common Questions

Internal Doors — Frequently Asked Questions

How much does internal door fitting cost in Berkshire?

Supply and fit of a single solid oak internal door with frame and architrave typically costs £500–£900 depending on the door spec and whether the existing frame needs replacing. A full house replacement — typically 8–12 doors — runs £3,500–£7,000 all-in. We provide a written fixed-price quote before any work starts.

Do you supply the doors or just hang them?

Both. We have preferred door suppliers and can source solid timber, engineered, and flush doors at trade prices. We can also hang doors you have purchased elsewhere — we will advise on sizing and style compatibility before you order.

Can you match the existing doors in a period property?

In most cases, yes. Period panel configurations — two-panel, four-panel, six-panel, raised-and-fielded — are widely available from specialist suppliers. Bring photos and measurements to the site visit and we will advise.

Do you hang fire doors?

Yes. We hang FD30 fire doors with the correct intumescent seals, gap tolerances, and self-closing fittings. If your property requires fire doors, we advise on what is needed and install correctly.

Are architraves and linings included?

Yes, when we supply and fit. A complete door installation includes the door leaf, hinges, latch or lock, handle, frame or lining (if replacing), and architraves both sides. We can also replace skirting boards and architraves throughout in a single project.

How long does it take to replace all the doors in a house?

A typical house with 8–10 internal doors takes two to three days. We work through room by room so you always have access to most of the house.

Can you fit bi-fold or sliding doors?

Yes. We fit bi-fold doors regularly — popular for opening a living room to a dining area. Pocket doors require more structural assessment and we evaluate these on a project-by-project basis.

What is the difference between solid timber and engineered doors?

Solid timber doors are milled from a single species — heavier, denser, more expensive, right for period properties and high-spec builds. Engineered doors use a solid timber frame with an engineered core and veneer face — lighter, more stable, and more cost-effective. For most modern applications, a good engineered door is the practical choice.
