Push-to-open earns its place on media walls because the whole point of the design is usually a clean, uninterrupted run of panels. Handles break up the elevation and catch the eye; a handleless front reads as architecture rather than furniture. On tall units either side of a chimney breast, or a low bank of cabinets under a wall-hung television, push-to-open keeps the lines quiet and the finish continuous.

It is not the right answer everywhere, though, and part of our job at the design stage is saying so. Doors that get opened with full hands — a drinks cabinet, a cupboard you reach into while holding a stack of board games — are easier to live with when there is something to pull. Cabinets used dozens of times a day suit a handle or a J-profile groove better than a latch, simply because a firm push in exactly the right spot becomes tiresome. And in households with toddlers, a handleless door is an invitation: everything opens with a shove at exactly toddler height. On most jobs we end up specifying a mix — push-to-open on display and high-level cabinets, discreet handles or finger pulls on the workhorse doors — and the elevation still reads as handleless from across the room.

Hinges in Detail: Cup Sizes, Cranks and Opening Angles

Almost every concealed cabinet hinge fitted in the UK uses a 35mm cup bored into the back of the door, which is why doors from a well-made unit can be re-hinged decades later. Beyond that shared dimension, the specification matters. Standard hinges open to around 107 degrees, which is fine for a wardrobe but awkward on a media cabinet where you need to pull out a drawer or reach equipment sitting behind the door — for those positions we fit 155-degree or 170-degree hinges so the door swings fully clear.

The crank of the hinge — full overlay, half overlay or inset — determines how the door sits relative to the cabinet edge, and it has to be decided before a single hole is drilled. Inset doors, sitting flush inside a face frame, are the traditional look for period-style joinery and are far less forgiving: the shadow gap around the door is on show, so a hinge with proper three-way adjustment is essential. A tall larder-style door in 22mm MDF with a painted finish is a heavy thing, and a pair of standard hinges will sag under it within a year. Drawer runners divide neatly into two families. Side-mounted ball-bearing runners bolt to the drawer sides, are cheap, and are visible every time the drawer opens. A shallow drawer holding remote controls asks very little; a deep drawer under a television carrying a games console, a stack of vinyl or a drawer-mounted printer wants a 40kg-rated runner and a drawer box built to match — solid sides properly housed and glued, not stapled chipboard. The runner is only as good as the box riding on it. This is the single most common failure we see in budget media units: a decent-looking drawer front hiding a flimsy box on 25kg side runners, loaded with twice that in equipment. The runner does not snap; it just develops a grinding note and a sag, and the drawer front starts catching its neighbour on the way past.

Media walls often carry a run of cabinets above head height — over the television, or bridging the top of tall side units. Hinged doors are the wrong tool up there: a door swinging open at face level is a hazard, and it blocks the very compartment you are reaching into. A painted 22mm MDF flap weighs noticeably more than the 18mm melamine door a budget installer plugged into the manufacturer's calculator, which is why you meet flaps that either crash down or refuse to stay shut. Fitting and Adjustment: Where the Fitter Earns Their Keep

Good hardware badly fitted behaves like bad hardware. The sequence matters.
