Bespoke Timber Fire Overmantels: Traditional Framing for Luxury Woodburners

A bespoke timber overmantel transforms a freestanding woodburning stove from a functional heating appliance into the defining architectural feature of a room. The design must balance the required structural clearances from the stove with the visual proportions of the room and the period character of the property.

Heat Clearance Requirements for Timber Overmantels

HETAS and the Building Regulations (Part J) specify minimum clearances between combustible materials and heat-producing appliances. For a typical woodburning stove with a flue temperature above 250°C, the minimum clearance from the top of the stove to any combustible material above is 300–600mm depending on the stove\'s specific heat output rating and the manufacturer\'s installation instructions. The mantel shelf must be outside the heat exclusion zone. We obtain the stove manufacturer\'s clearance specification at the design stage and confirm compliance with the final overmantel design.

Mantel Shelf Profiles and Pilaster Detailing

The mantel shelf is the most visually prominent element of the overmantel — its depth (typically 200–300mm), profile moulding, and corbel or bracket support detail define the character of the whole composition. A deep egg-and-dart ovolo cornice under the shelf edge suits Georgian interiors; a simpler chamfered profile suits Arts and Crafts and Edwardian properties. Pilasters either side of the firebox opening — with a simplified Doric or Ionic capital — create a classical framing that is particularly appropriate in the high-ceilinged Victorian reception rooms found across Windsor, Maidenhead, and Ascot.

FAQ

Common Questions

Do you need Building Regulations approval for a new overmantel?

A timber overmantel fitted to an existing firebox does not require Building Regulations approval provided it maintains the required clearances. Installing or modifying a stove does require notification.

Can an overmantel be painted or should it be left in natural timber?

Either is appropriate. Painted overmantels in a Farrow & Ball tone matching the room joinery create a unified architectural composition. Natural timber overmantels suit a more rustic or Arts and Crafts interior.

Do you supply and install the woodburning stove as well as the overmantel?

We supply and install the timber overmantel. A HETAS-registered installer handles the stove and flue — we coordinate these trades as part of the project.
