Alcove & Office Guide

The Secret to Matching Alcove Unit Paint Exactly to Your Farrow & Ball Walls

A seamlessly colour-matched alcove unit — where the joinery and the surrounding wall read as a single surface — is one of the most visually striking results in bespoke fitted furniture. Achieving this match requires understanding the difference between wall paint and furniture paint.

Why Brush-Applied Emulsion Does Not Match Spray-Finished Joinery

Wall paint and furniture paint are fundamentally different products. Farrow & Ball wall emulsion has a flat, matte finish with a specific light-absorption quality that derives from its formulation and application method. Factory spray-painted furniture lacquer has a harder, more durable surface with a slightly higher sheen — even in an eggshell specification. Applied next to each other, these two finishes read as different materials even in the same colour. The solution is to use a colour-matched furniture lacquer in the appropriate sheen level for the furniture, and to accept that the wall and unit will read as complementary rather than identical — which in practice looks far better.

How We Colour-Match Farrow & Ball and Little Greene Colours

We use a spectrometer-based colour matching system to convert any Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, or Dulux Trade colour reference into a precision-formulated two-pack polyurethane lacquer. The spectrophotometer reads the exact RGB value of the paint sample and formulates the lacquer to match in the correct sheen level. For a new build where no wall paint has yet been applied, we work from the paint code directly. The result is a furniture finish that is visually very close to the wall colour while being significantly more durable as a furniture surface.

FAQ

Common Questions

Can you match a colour from an existing painted wall?

Yes — we can bring a spectrometer to the measuring visit and take a colour reading directly from your painted wall surface.

What sheen level should I specify for a painted alcove unit?

A 10–20% sheen (eggshell equivalent) is the standard recommendation for alcove furniture — it is wipeable and durable without looking obviously glossy next to a matte wall.

Can the alcove unit be painted on-site rather than factory-sprayed?

Yes — we can deliver the unit primed and ready for a decorator to paint on-site. This allows easier repair if the paint is damaged later, but will not achieve the same durability as factory spray.
