The catch is daily usability: every time you want something, the cushions come off and anyone sitting there has to move, which in practice means lidded benches become long-term storage and the things inside are seen twice a year.
Drawers cost more because each one is a piece of cabinetmaking in its own right — a box, a front, runners, alignment — but they turn the bench into everyday storage. Toys go away at bedtime without anyone standing up; bedding comes out of a guest-room bench while the bed is being made on top of it. My general steer is drawers for anything used weekly, a lid for genuine deep storage, and occasionally a hybrid: drawers across the main run with a small lidded section at one end where a radiator pipe or an awkward corner would have made a drawer mean-spirited anyway.
Hinges, Stays and Finger Safety for Children
Hardware is where a lidded bench is made safe or made dangerous. A solid MDF lid over a metre wide is heavy, and unrestrained it will fall like a guillotine — which is precisely the injury toy boxes were once notorious for. Every hinged top I build gets soft-down stays that catch the lid and lower it gently over the last part of its travel, sized to the actual lid weight rather than picked off a shelf, plus a continuous piano hinge or a row of quality butt hinges so the load is spread rather than hanging off two screws at each end.
The detail people do not think of is the closing edge. I leave a deliberate finger gap along the front — a shadow line between lid and carcass — so a small hand resting on the box edge is not pinched when the lid comes down, and I round over the lid nose so there is no sharp arris at child height. On drawer versions, soft-close runners do the same job: the drawer cannot be slammed on fingers, and the fronts get eased edges rather than square ones. None of this hardware is expensive; it simply has to be specified at the design stage rather than regretted afterwards.
The Radiator Problem: Relocate, Replace or Ventilate
Most under-window walls in the Victorian and thirties houses I work on around Windsor, Wokingham and Sunninghill already have a radiator on them, because under the window is where heating engineers have always put them. That leaves three honest options. The first is relocation to an adjacent wall — a plumber's day plus making good, but it frees the full bench for storage and is usually the right call when the room layout allows. The second is swapping the panel radiator for a low-line or plinth-mounted convector that tucks under the bench, keeping heat at the window where it counters the cold downdraught.
The third is building the bench around the radiator with a ventilated front: a grille low down to draw cool air in, open slots below the seat nose to let warm air out, and the storage sections planned either side of the heat. Done properly, with the open area calculated rather than guessed, you keep most of the radiator's useful output; done as a solid box with token slots, you lose a third of it and the room runs cold. I set out the options with rough costs at the survey, because the radiator decision changes the whole internal layout and needs settling before anything is drawn.
Window Boards, Sills and How the Bench Meets Them
The junction between the bench top and the window board is the detail that separates fitted joinery from a box pushed against a wall. Ideally the bench top passes just beneath the existing window board so the board oversails the seat back by a few millimetres — a clean shadow line that forgives seasonal movement in both. Where the window board sits too low for that, the options are trimming the seat height back, replacing the board with a deeper one that becomes part of the bench composition, or scribing the bench top around it with a neat mason's-mitre style return.
What I will not do is trap the board or bury the junction in caulk, because both look wrong within a year as the materials move at different rates. In period houses the boards are often bowed or previously hacked about, and replacing them in MR MDF or matching timber as part of the bench job is cheap while everything is open. The same thinking applies below the window: any sub-sill vents or weep paths in the wall stay unobstructed, and curtains or blinds get checked against the new seat depth so full-length curtains are not suddenly puddling on the cushion.
Specifying the Cushion Properly
The cushion decides whether the bench gets sat on or just looked at, and it is worth specifying with the same care as the joinery. The foam should be a genuine high-density seating grade — the sort rated for daily upholstery use — at 65 to 80mm thick, optionally wrapped in a soft polyester or feather topper for a more inviting profile. Low-density foam from a market stall feels fine in the showroom and is flat and dead within a year. For a bench used as a reading perch, firmer is better than softer; you sit on a window seat, you do not sink into it.
Covers should be removable on decent zips, in a fabric rated for upholstery abrasion, and where children or dogs are part of the household a washable or wipeable fabric earns its cost many times over. I template the cushion to the finished bench rather than the drawings, because a scribed bench in a period bay is never perfectly rectangular, and I keep the cushion in one or two large sections rather than a row of small pads that slide apart the first time anyone sits down. A local upholsterer makes these to my templates; it is a trade worth using properly rather than approximating.
Bay Windows and Segmented Carcasses
A bench in a square bay or a canted Victorian bay is a different build from a straight run. The seat is constructed as a series of segmented carcasses — one per facet of the bay — each scribed to its own wall angles and joined on site so the finished seat reads as a single continuous piece. The angles in a period bay are never quite what the drawing says: plaster thickens towards corners, the facets are rarely equal, and the skirting kicks everything out at the bottom. I template each facet with hardboard patterns before anything is cut, which is slower than measuring but the only way the seat nose ends up as one fair line around the bay.
Storage in a bay bench needs realism. Drawers only work square-on in the central facet; the angled side sections are better served by lift-up lids or left as fixed seat over a closed void that carries pipework. A common compromise is a pair of proper drawers in the middle with lidded wings, which keeps the everyday storage where you can reach it. Bay benches carry more templating and site time than a flat wall, and the price reflects that, but in the right room they are the single best-value piece of joinery in the house — a wasted floor zone turned into the seat everyone argues over.
Load-Rated Runners: Why Big Drawers Need Serious Hardware
A bench drawer is not a kitchen drawer. At 900 to 1200mm wide and 450mm or more deep, filled with toys, books or bedding, a single drawer can easily be carrying 30 to 50 kilograms — and the runner has to hold that cantilevered at full extension while a child hangs off the front of it. Standard side-mount runners rated at 25 or 30kg will sag, rack and start sticking within a couple of years under that load. I specify heavy-duty full-extension runners rated at 40 to 70kg for drawers this size, mounted into the carcass sides with every screw hole used, not the three that were convenient.
Full extension matters as much as the load rating: a three-quarter extension runner on a 500mm deep drawer leaves the back 150mm as a permanent mystery zone where things go to be forgotten. Soft-close is standard on my benches — on a drawer this heavy it is a safety feature as much as a luxury. Wide drawers also need a stiff front and a well-braced box so they do not rack when pulled from one corner; a central runner or a stiffening rail under the drawer bottom takes care of that on the widest spans. Hardware is a small fraction of the job cost and the wrong choice is the first thing that fails.
Cold Walls and Condensation: Keeping the Contents Dry
Every under-window bench sits against an external wall, and in an older solid-wall house that wall runs cold. Seal a storage box hard against it and you create a still, cool pocket where moist room air condenses — and six months later the spare bedding smells musty and the back panel is spotting with mould. This is the most common fault I see in home-made and flat-pack window benches, and it is entirely avoidable at the design stage.
My standard details are simple. The carcass back stands off the wall on battens, leaving a ventilated air gap rather than a sealed contact. Discreet ventilation slots at each end of the plinth and under the seat nose let air move through the void, so the space behaves like the room rather than like a cellar. On colder walls — north-facing, solid brick — I line the inside face of the back panel with a thin insulated board so the surface the contents touch stays above dew point. None of this is visible in the finished piece and none of it costs much; it is the difference between a bench you can store fabric in and one you learn to keep empty.
Common Mistakes with Window Benches
Most of the failed window seats I am asked to replace share the same handful of faults, and almost all of them were decided — or not decided — before anything was built. The recurring one is height: a box built to 450mm that then gets an 80mm cushion, leaving everyone perched with their feet swinging. The carcass height has to be planned around the finished, compressed cushion height, not the bare box.
