Designing a Compact Cloffice (Closet Office) for Hybrid Workers in Berkshire
The cloffice — a portmanteau of closet and office — is the most space-efficient home office solution available to Berkshire homeowners who work from home two to three days per week but do not have a dedicated spare room. Done correctly, it creates a functional, professional workspace that disappears behind closed doors at the end of the working day.
The Optimal Cloffice Space Planning
A minimum useful cloffice requires a 700mm deep floor-to-ceiling alcove or cupboard space with at least 900mm of internal width. This provides a 700mm deep desk surface, a shelf above at eye level for a monitor, and storage above and below. Bi-fold doors are the most practical closure — they fold fully back to the sides, leaving the entire width accessible while taking minimal swing space. Sliding doors are the alternative where even bi-fold swing is unavailable. Standard hinged doors work only if the adjacent floor space is clear enough for the door to open fully.

Ventilation and Video Call Acoustics
A cloffice without ventilation becomes warm and uncomfortable within an hour of use with a laptop. A passive vent through the upper panel or a small silent fan (12V, 80mm) maintains air circulation without noise. For video calls, the rear wall of the cloffice should be treated with a simple acoustic panel or simply styled shelf to prevent the echoey sound that blank closet walls produce — this is now a standard consideration as hybrid working has normalised video calls as the primary communication tool.
Converting an Existing Wardrobe: What Actually Happens
Most cloffices I build start life as a fitted wardrobe or an over-deep cupboard on a landing. The first job is a proper strip-out: old rails, shelves and any melamine carcass come out, and I check what is behind them. In older Berkshire houses I regularly find the alcove walls are bare brick with a skim of loose plaster, out of plumb by 15–20mm top to bottom, and hiding an abandoned gas pipe or two. None of that is a problem, but it all has to be known before anything is cut.
From there the sequence runs: make good the walls where needed, first-fix electrics while everything is open, fit a level batten framework or floor plinth so the desk has something true to sit on, then bring in the joinery. Trying to skip the strip-out and build over the old wardrobe interior is the classic false economy — you inherit every sag and slope the old fitter left behind.
Getting Power and Data Into a Cupboard
A cloffice lives or dies on its electrics, and this is the part people most often forget until the joinery is finished. You want, as a minimum, a double 13-amp socket mounted just above desk height on the rear or side wall, plus a socket with integrated USB-C for chargers. I have an electrician run these as a spur while the cupboard is stripped, so the cables are chased or clipped out of sight before any panels go in.
Data matters too. Wi-Fi usually reaches a cupboard fine, but if your work involves big file transfers or flaky video calls, a hard-wired ethernet point inside the unit is a cheap upgrade at this stage and an annoying one later. I drill and grommet the cable routes through the joinery as I build, so nothing is squashed behind a carcass and everything can be pulled out and replaced in future.
Desk Depth When the Cupboard Is Shallow
The 700mm figure above is the comfortable ideal, but plenty of alcove cupboards in Bracknell and Ascot semis are only 550–600mm deep, and some wardrobes barely 500mm. These can still work. At 550mm you can run a fixed desk with a monitor pushed to the back wall; at 500mm I would fit a monitor arm clamped to the rear edge instead, which lets the screen float over the back of the desk and recovers real working depth for a keyboard and notebook.
Below 500mm, a fixed desk stops being pleasant and I would suggest a different approach — a fold-down worktop on heavy-duty stays, or accepting the cupboard as storage-plus-charging and putting the desk elsewhere. The mistake I see is squeezing a 400mm shelf in, calling it a desk, and then never using it. Honest sizing at survey saves that disappointment.
Lighting That Works On Camera
A cupboard has no natural light, so the lighting has to be designed rather than hoped for. My standard detail is an LED strip in an aluminium diffuser channel, recessed into the underside of the first shelf above the desk. The diffuser matters: bare LED tape reflects as a dotted line in a glossy monitor and glares on video calls. I specify around 3000–4000K colour temperature — warm enough to be liveable, cool enough that paperwork reads clearly.
Avoid a single downlight directly above your seating position; it lights the top of your head and throws your face into shadow on calls. A strip washing light forward from above the desk, plus whatever room light sits behind you, gives a much more even result. The LED driver tucks into the top of the unit or behind a shelf, wired to a small switch just inside the door so the whole thing comes on as you sit down.
Pocket, Bifold or Hinged: Closing It Away at 5pm
The doors are what make a cloffice a cloffice, so they deserve more thought than they usually get. Pocket doors — which slide back into cavities either side of the opening — give the best working experience because they disappear completely while you sit there. The trade-offs are cost, roughly a third more than a bifold set once the cavity joinery is included, and the 100mm or so of width the pockets consume each side.
Bifolds are my default recommendation: they fold flat against the reveals, use proven hardware, and keep almost the full opening usable. The one thing to watch is door flatness — tall painted MDF bifolds want a mid-rail or a 22mm board to stop them bowing seasonally. Standard hinged doors on soft-close hinges are the cheapest route and fine where the room has genuine clear swing space, but a door standing open across a landing all day gets old quickly.
Materials: MR MDF, Birch Ply and Paint
For a painted cloffice I build carcasses and doors from moisture-resistant MDF, usually 18mm, because it machines to a clean edge, stays flat, and takes paint beautifully. The desk top is where I upgrade: either 24mm MR MDF for stiffness or birch ply with a hardwood lipping, because a desk takes elbows, mugs and laptop heat every day. Exposed front edges and face frames are solid tulipwood — MDF corners chip; timber ones dent gracefully and repaint.
On finish, spraying in the workshop gives the flattest, most durable surface, and for a cloffice it is usually practical because most parts are made off site and assembled in place. Site-brushed finishes with a quality water-based eggshell are perfectly respectable and easier to touch in later. Either way, the desk surface itself benefits from a couple of extra coats or a harder-wearing lacquer — it is the one surface that genuinely gets worn.
Storage Above and Below the Desk
The vertical space in a cupboard is the whole reason a cloffice out-performs a desk in the corner of a room. Below the desk I usually fit a shallow drawer on soft-close runners for stationery, and either an open shelf or a pull-out for a printer or paperwork trays — keeping one knee-side clear so you can actually sit in comfortably. Above the desk, the first shelf sits about 500–550mm over the worktop so a monitor clears it, then shelving continues up on an adjustable shelf-pin system to the top of the opening.
The top shelf, the one you need a step for, is for archive boxes and the things you touch twice a year. Resist the urge to fill every millimetre with fixed shelves — adjustable pins cost pennies at build time and mean the unit adapts when your kit changes.
Common Mistakes I See in Cloffice Conversions
The same handful of errors come up again and again, usually in DIY or flat-pack conversions I am asked to put right. In rough order of frequency:
- No electrics inside the unit — an extension lead trailing under the door forever.
- Desk fixed level to a sloping floor by eye, so pens roll and the monitor leans.
- No ventilation, discovered the first warm afternoon in June.
- Doors chosen before the chair, so the doors cannot close with the chair inside.
- Shelf above the desk set too low for the monitor that arrives the following month.
- Cheap hinges and runners — the parts you operate ten times a day are the last place to save money.
Every one of these is cheap to avoid at the design stage and expensive to fix afterwards, which is the honest argument for having the layout measured and drawn before anything is ordered.
How the Job Runs From Survey to Fit
A typical cloffice job starts with a measuring visit where I check the opening at several heights and depths — cupboards are rarely square, and the difference between the widest and narrowest point decides how much scribing the fit will need. We agree the layout, door type, finish and electrical points, and I produce a simple drawing to confirm it all before materials are ordered.
Cutting and finishing happen in the workshop, which keeps dust and paint out of your house. On site, the strip-out and electrician’s first fix come first, then the carcass, desk and shelving go in scribed to the walls, then doors are hung and adjusted. Most conversions take two to three days on site. The last hour is the important one: loading your actual equipment in, checking cable runs, and adjusting shelf heights around the things you really own rather than the things the drawing assumed.

I would not build shallower than 500mm, and 550–600mm is far more comfortable. Below 500mm a laptop works but a monitor sits too close to your face — a monitor arm clamped to the back edge claws back 100mm or so of usable depth.
Which door type hides a cloffice best — pocket, bifold or hinged?
Pocket doors give the cleanest result because they retract fully into side cavities, but the hardware costs roughly a third more and needs around 100mm of depth each side. Bifolds are the practical middle ground. Standard hinged doors only work where the swing space is genuinely clear.
Will a cloffice get too hot with the doors closed?
With a laptop, monitor and charger running in an unventilated cupboard, yes — noticeably within an hour. A vent low down and another high up lets convection do the work silently. If a small NAS or laser printer lives in there too, I fit a quiet 12V fan.
What do you build a cloffice from?
Moisture-resistant MDF for painted carcasses and doors, because it machines cleanly and holds paint well, with birch ply where I want extra stiffness in the desk top. Solid tulipwood is my choice for face frames and lippings that take knocks.
Where does the office chair go at the end of the day?
Plan for it at the design stage. A compact task chair on castors can roll under a 700mm-deep desk inside the cupboard so the doors still close. With shallower desks the chair lives outside, so pick one that earns its place in the room.
Can a cloffice look decent on video calls?
Yes, and it is worth designing for. A shelf at head height behind you, warm LED strip lighting under the shelf above the desk, and a matt painted finish behind the camera all read far better than a bare cupboard back wall.
Is a cloffice worth it compared with a freestanding desk?
If you work from home two or three days a week and the alternative is a desk permanently cluttering a bedroom or living room, yes. The whole point is that the working day closes behind two doors and the room goes back to being a room.
