Our Approach

Small Faults, Fixed Properly

A staircase in daily use develops faults gradually — a tread that starts to move slightly underfoot, a spindle that loosens at the top, a newel post that rocks a fraction when you take hold of it. None of this usually means the staircase has become unsafe. It means something small has worked loose, and it needs fixing properly rather than being lived with.

A squeak is usually a tread moving against a riser or a loose wedge, not a structural fault. The timber hasn't failed; the joint has simply opened up enough to create friction and sound when weight passes over it. Finding the exact point of movement is most of the work — the fix itself is usually straightforward once that point is located.

We work from whichever side gives the best access and causes the least disruption — sometimes from above, lifting a stair runner at a single step; sometimes from below, through the understairs cupboard or the ceiling void beneath the flight. The approach is chosen to solve the fault with the smallest amount of disturbance to decoration, flooring, or the rest of the staircase.

Repairs are priced and carried out as repairs — matching existing timber, spindle profile, and finish, and fixing joints from the most discreet angle available. The aim with every repair is the same: the staircase should feel solid and silent afterwards, and the work itself should not be visible.

Most individual repairs — a squeak, a loose spindle, a newel post that needs re-fixing — can be assessed from clear photographs sent by email or WhatsApp. Where several elements need checking, or access to the understairs space is unclear from photos, we arrange a short site visit, at no cost, before quoting.

We carry out staircase repairs across Berkshire and South Buckinghamshire, working to the same standard whether the job is a single squeaking tread in Ascot or a loose newel post and a handrail joint in Maidenhead.

What We Repair

Staircase Repairs We Carry Out

Squeaking Treads

A squeak is usually a tread moving against a riser, or a loose wedge underneath, not a structural fault. We find the exact point of movement — sometimes from above, sometimes by working from underneath via the understairs cupboard — and refit the joint with glue blocks, screws, or a replacement wedge. Carpet is lifted only where necessary and relaid afterwards. Most individual squeaks are fixed within an hour; a staircase with several active squeaks typically takes half a day.

Loose Spindles

A spindle that moves at the top or bottom has usually worked loose from its housing in the handrail or the string, or the glue has failed with age and heating cycles. We re-fix it in place with the correct adhesive and mechanical fixing, matching the existing spindle style. Where a spindle is cracked rather than loose, we replace it like-for-like so the repair is not visible from the stairs or the hallway below.

Damaged Tread Edges

Chipped nosings, split tread edges, and worn step edges are common on stairs in daily use, particularly where a stair runner has worn through. We patch, fill, or splice new timber into the damaged section, matching the existing tread profile and finish. Where the damage runs deeper — a genuine crack through the tread — we fit a new tread in the existing opening rather than disturb the stair above and below it.

Loose Newel Posts

A newel post that rocks at the base is usually a sign the fixing into the floor or the first tread has loosened, not that the post itself has failed. We re-secure it with fixings suited to the floor construction underneath — timber or solid — and check the cap and any adjoining handrail joint at the same time, since a loose newel post often loosens the rail above it.

Handrail Joint Repairs

A handrail that flexes or creaks where two lengths meet, or where it returns into a newel post, usually has a joint that has opened up rather than a rail that needs replacing. We re-glue, re-dowel, or re-screw the joint from the most discreet angle available, and touch in the finish so the repair does not stand out against the existing rail.

Stair-Gate Fixing Points

Stair gates fitted for young children or pets put repeated lateral load through a newel post or wall fixing, and the point can work loose or split over time. We reinforce the fixing point — adding a backing block, repositioning the fixing, or fitting a proper pressure plate where the gate design allows — so the gate stays secure without further damage to the staircase.

Scope

What a Staircase Repair Does Not Cover

This page covers repair — fixing what already exists. Some staircase requests go further than that and move into a different kind of project:

  • Replacing every spindle, or the full handrail run, in a different style throughout the flight.
  • Fitting new timber over the existing treads for a different look across the whole staircase.
  • A complete change of material, finish, or spindle design from top to bottom.
  • A full refurbishment of the staircase from the ground up.

If you want to go further than a repair — a different look for the whole staircase rather than a fix to what's already there — that is a separate piece of work, priced and scoped on its own terms. See what's possible for a complete staircase transformation if that is closer to what you have in mind.

How It Works

From First Photo to Fixed Staircase

01

Send Photos

Call, WhatsApp, or email photos of the squeak, loose spindle, or damaged tread. Most repairs can be scoped from a few clear photos.

02

Assessment

Straightforward repairs are quoted directly from photos. Where several elements need checking, or access is unclear, we arrange a short, free site visit.

03

Fixed-Price Quote

A written quote for the specific repair, priced per item where there's more than one, so you see exactly what you're paying for.

04

The Repair

Carried out on the agreed date. Most individual repairs are same-visit; a staircase with several issues may take a full day.

05

Check & Sign-Off

Every repaired joint tested under load before we leave, and carpet or finishes relaid where they were lifted.

Pricing

What Does Staircase Repair Cost in Berkshire?

These are realistic repair-scale ranges based on recent Berkshire jobs, noticeably lower than a full staircase transformation because the work is targeted rather than whole-flight. Fitting and standard finishing are included; the free quote — from photos or a site visit — confirms the exact figure.

RepairTypical Range (all-in)
Squeak diagnosis and fix, per tread£90 – £160
Spindle re-fixing (loose, not broken), each£40 – £80
Spindle replacement, like-for-like, each£70 – £130
Tread edge or nosing repair£90 – £180
Single tread replacement, like-for-like£180 – £320
Newel post re-fixing£120 – £220
Handrail joint repair£100 – £200
Stair-gate fixing point reinforcement£70 – £140

The main cost driver is access — a squeak reachable from an open understairs cupboard is quicker to fix than one only reachable from above through a carpeted tread. We are not VAT-registered, so these figures are the final price, and every quote — whether given from photos or after a site visit — is free.

Common Questions

Staircase Repairs — Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my staircase squeak?

A squeak is almost always a tread moving slightly against a riser, or a loose wedge underneath, rather than a sign of a structural fault. That small movement creates friction between two pieces of timber, which makes the sound. We find the specific point of movement and refit it — most individual squeaks are resolved within an hour.

Can you fix squeaky stairs without lifting the whole carpet?

Often, yes. Many squeaks can be reached and fixed from underneath, through the understairs cupboard or the ceiling void below the flight, without disturbing the carpet at all. Where the cause is only accessible from above, we lift the carpet at that one step and relay it afterwards. We confirm which approach applies once we've seen photos or assessed the stair in person.

How much does staircase repair cost in Berkshire?

Most single repairs — a squeak, a loose spindle, a newel post that needs re-fixing — cost between £40 and £220 depending on the work involved. A damaged tread replacement typically runs £180–£320. We price each item separately in a fixed-price written quote, so you only pay for the specific repair needed, not a wider package.

Is a loose spindle a safety issue?

A spindle that moves slightly at the top is usually a loose fixing rather than an immediate hazard, but it should be re-secured before it works further loose or a child or pet puts weight on it. A cracked or split spindle is a different matter and is best replaced promptly, before it fails completely.

Can you repair a single damaged tread instead of replacing the whole staircase?

Yes. Most tread damage is localised — a cracked nosing, a split along the grain, a worn edge — and can be patched, or the single tread replaced within the existing opening. There is rarely any need to disturb the rest of the staircase to fix one damaged tread.

How long does a staircase repair take?

A single squeak or loose spindle is typically fixed within an hour. A staircase with several issues — a few squeaks, a loose newel post, a handrail joint — usually takes half a day to a full day. We give a specific timeframe once we know the scope, either from photos or a short site visit.

What causes a newel post to feel loose?

Almost always the fixing into the floor, or into the adjoining tread, has worked loose over time — not the post itself failing. Wood movement, repeated hand pressure when using the stairs, and the age of the original fixings all contribute. We re-secure the post with fixings suited to the floor construction beneath it, whether that's timber or solid.

Can you repair a handrail joint instead of replacing the whole rail?

In most cases, yes. A handrail that creaks or flexes at a joint usually needs that joint re-glued, re-dowelled, or re-screwed — not a new rail. We work from the most discreet angle available and touch in the finish so the repair doesn't stand out against the rest of the rail.

Do you repair stair-gate fixing points?

Yes. Repeated use of a pressure-fit or screw-fit stair gate can work its fixing point loose, or split the surrounding timber, over time. We reinforce the point — a backing block, a repositioned fixing, or a proper pressure plate where the gate design allows — so the gate holds securely without further damage to the staircase.

Will the repair match the existing staircase?

Yes — that's the point of a repair rather than a replacement. We match timber species, spindle profile, and finish as closely as possible, and carry out joint repairs from angles that keep the work out of view. A well-executed repair should not be obvious once it's finished.

Can you also transform the whole staircase, not just repair it?

Yes, but that's a different piece of work from a repair, and we treat it as a separate project with its own scope and pricing. If you want a different look throughout — new spindles, a new handrail, or a change across the whole flight — see our dedicated staircase transformation service for that scope.

Do I need to be home for the repair?

For most repairs, yes, since we need access to the staircase and often the understairs cupboard. We arrange a specific time slot rather than an all-day window. Quotes can often be arranged from clear photos alone, which keeps the in-person time needed down to the repair itself.
