How to Clean and Maintain Spray-Painted Bespoke Furniture Long-Term

Factory spray-painted bespoke furniture is significantly more durable than brush-applied paint — but it is not indestructible. The correct cleaning and maintenance approach extends the life of the finish significantly and prevents the premature ageing that results from the wrong products.

Daily and Weekly Cleaning Methods

For daily cleaning, a soft, slightly damp microfibre cloth removes fingerprints, dust, and light surface marks without damaging the finish. Avoid abrasive cloths, scouring pads, or rough paper towels — they will dull the sheen of the paint surface over time. For more stubborn marks — grease, food splashes — a diluted neutral kitchen cleaner (Flash, Method) applied with a damp cloth is appropriate. Avoid bleach-based cleaners, solvent-based products, and abrasive cream cleaners. Immediately dry any excess moisture from the surface after cleaning.

Scratch and Chip Repair Methods

Surface scratches that have not penetrated to the MDF substrate can often be polished out with a specialist furniture polishing compound or a light application of a matching paint touch-up. Full chips or scratches that expose the substrate require a small touch-up with matching paint, applied carefully with a fine artist\'s brush. The challenge of touch-up on factory spray-painted surfaces is that the touch-up paint application will always be slightly visible on close inspection — a perfect match is not achievable with a brush over spray. We retain a small quantity of matched paint for each project and can advise on touch-up technique.

FAQ

Common Questions

How long does factory spray-paint last before it needs repainting?

With correct cleaning and maintenance, a two-pack polyurethane factory spray finish should last 10–15 years before any significant degradation in appearance.

Can the units be repainted in a different colour in the future?

Yes — existing spray-painted surfaces can be resprayed in a new colour after light sanding and priming. The result will be equivalent to the original finish.

What is the best polish or protector for spray-painted furniture?

A light application of Pledge furniture polish (wax-free) maintains the sheen of spray-painted surfaces. Wax polishes can cause silicone contamination that makes future repainting difficult.
