What drives the cost of a fitted wardrobe?

After building wardrobes across Berkshire for years, the single biggest variable is almost always the internal configuration — not the external carcass. Two wardrobes the same size can differ by £1,000 purely because one has four shelves and two hanging rails, while the other has twelve drawers, shoe racks, a pull-down rail, and a full-height mirror panel.

Here is how each decision moves the price:

Material

Painted MDF is the most common choice in Berkshire — it gives a clean, contemporary finish and costs less than solid timber. Veneered board sits between the two. Solid oak or walnut adds 30–60% to the price but will outlast the house.

Doors

Hinged doors are the simplest and cheapest. Sliding doors add £300–£600 due to the track hardware, but work better in tight spaces. Bifold doors sit in between. All can be painted or faced with fabric, glass inserts, or mirror.

Internal fit-out

Standard hanging rails and fixed shelves cost least. Every drawer you add costs £80–£150. Pull-out trouser rails, velvet jewellery inserts, shoe racks, and lighting add further. Most customers end up spending more on the inside than they expect.

Floor-to-ceiling

Going right to the ceiling (rather than leaving a top box gap) adds an extra day of work and more material, but makes the room look bigger and gives you more usable space. Worth doing if budget allows.

Painting

We include primer and two topcoats in our quotes. If you want a specialist lacquered finish (sometimes called a kitchen-grade finish), this is done off-site and adds cost — but is extremely durable.

Bespoke vs IKEA PAX: the honest comparison

IKEA PAX starts at a few hundred pounds. A bespoke fitted wardrobe starts at £1,500. That gap is real, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. But here is what that gap actually buys you:

  • Every millimetre used — bespoke wardrobes are built to your exact wall dimensions, filling alcoves and awkward angles that PAX cannot reach.
  • No flatpack fatigue — PAX uses cam-lock fixings that loosen over time. A bespoke carcass is screwed and glued and will outlast a 25-year mortgage.
  • Walls that are rarely perfectly square — bespoke scribing (trimming the wardrobe to fit your wall angle exactly) makes a significant visual difference.
  • Resale value — estate agents consistently report that quality fitted furniture adds value and accelerates sales. PAX is typically removed before a sale.
  • Finish quality — the difference between a bespoke painted wardrobe and a painted PAX hack is immediately obvious in person.

For rooms where budget is genuinely tight, PAX is a reasonable choice. For master bedrooms in Berkshire homes — where the room is a feature and the wardrobe will be there for decades — bespoke is almost always the better investment.

What does a Berkshire premium look like?

Berkshire — particularly the Ascot, Virginia Water, and Windsor corridor — is a high-cost area for building work. Materials cost the same as anywhere in the UK, but skilled trades charge a premium that reflects local living costs and demand. Expect to pay 10–20% more than a national average quote for equivalent work.

This is not necessarily bad news. Higher-earning areas also attract better tradespeople — because the client base demands quality. Budget fitters from outside the area rarely understand what Berkshire homeowners expect from a finish.

How to avoid a bad quote

Three things that should concern you in any fitted wardrobe quote:

  • A price without a measuring visit. No carpenter can quote a fitted wardrobe accurately without seeing the room. If you get an email quote based on rough dimensions, treat it as a rough guide at best.
  • A quote without materials specified. "Fitted wardrobe, painted" is not a specification. A proper quote should state board type, door style, internal configuration, and whether painting is included.
  • A quote with no fixed price. "Day rate, materials extra" on a fitted wardrobe project is a red flag. You should receive a fixed-price quote before any work starts.

Frequently asked questions

How much do fitted wardrobes cost in Berkshire?

A single fitted wardrobe in painted MDF typically costs £1,500–£3,500 in Berkshire. Walk-in wardrobes range from £4,500 to £12,000+. Premium solid timber or high-gloss finishes add 30–60% to the base price.

Are fitted wardrobes cheaper than IKEA?

IKEA PAX is cheaper upfront, but bespoke fitted wardrobes use every millimetre of your space, last 20+ years without the flatpack fatigue, and add more value to your home. For rooms with sloped ceilings, alcoves, or unusual dimensions, bespoke is often the only option that actually works.

What affects the cost of a fitted wardrobe?

Size, material (painted MDF, solid timber, veneer), internal configuration (hanging rails, drawers, shelves), door type (hinged, sliding, bifold), and whether painting is included. Sliding doors cost more than hinged due to the track hardware.

How long does a fitted wardrobe installation take?

A standard single wardrobe takes 1–2 days. A built-in wardrobe across a full wall takes 2–3 days. A walk-in wardrobe typically takes 3–5 days depending on size and internal complexity.
