Media Wall Guide

Designing a Media Wall Around a Structural Chimney Breast in Windsor Homes

The chimney breast is the architectural feature most commonly paired with a bespoke media wall in Berkshire\'s period housing stock — and when handled correctly, it becomes a structural asset rather than a complication. Windsor, Maidenhead, and Reading have a significant proportion of Victorian and Edwardian houses where this configuration is the natural starting point.

Using the Chimney Breast as the Centrepiece

The most successful chimney breast media walls treat the breast itself as the natural TV and fire panel — a solid, level surface on which to mount the screen with the existing flue providing a natural vertical channel above. Flanking alcoves each side become bespoke storage units, their depth typically between 250mm and 350mm. This three-element composition — storage, chimney breast, storage — creates a symmetrical, architectural result that looks as if it has always been there.

Structural Considerations and Flue Management

If you want to install a live real-flame fire, the existing flue may still be viable — a HETAS-registered sweep can confirm its condition. If the flue is redundant, a gas or bioethanol fire can use a balanced-flue liner run through the existing stack. For purely decorative electric fires, the flue is capped at the top externally and the fireplace opening is framed with a custom timber mantel. The carpentry frames around the existing masonry structure — we do not remove chimney breasts, which is structural work outside our scope.

FAQ

Common Questions

Can a TV be mounted directly onto a chimney breast?

Yes, provided the breast is solid masonry or brick and the mount uses appropriate fixings. We test the masonry at the measuring visit and specify the correct wall plug and bolt specification.

What happens to the alcoves if they are different widths?

Asymmetric alcoves are very common in Berkshire Victorian properties. We design each alcove unit independently so both look intentional from the front, matching shelf heights and door styles across the full width.

Do you work in Windsor and Eton specifically?

Yes — Windsor, Eton, Old Windsor, and Eton Wick are all within our regular working area. Free measuring visit included.
