Media Wall Guide
How Wide Should Your Media Wall Be? Sizing Guide for 55, 65, and 75 Inch TVs
The relationship between TV size, media wall width, and room proportions is something most clients have not considered before their measuring visit. Getting the balance right determines whether the finished unit looks architectural or awkward.
TV Size to Media Wall Width: The Practical Ratios
As a general guideline, the media wall should be at least 1.5× the width of the television to allow for meaningful flanking storage on each side. A 65-inch TV is approximately 1.45m wide — meaning a media wall of at least 2.2m provides comfortable symmetry. A 75-inch TV (approximately 1.68m wide) ideally sits within a 2.5m–3.0m wide unit. These are starting points; room width, chimney breast placement, and doorway positions all affect the final proportions, which we resolve at the measuring visit.

Working With Chimney Breasts and Alcoves
The most common media wall scenario in Berkshire properties — particularly Victorian houses in Windsor, Reading, and Maidenhead — involves a chimney breast flanked by two alcoves. Here, the chimney breast becomes the TV and fire panel, and the alcoves provide natural housing for flanking storage. The total effective width is the alcove-to-alcove measurement. This usually falls between 2.8m and 3.6m in Victorian front rooms — well suited to a 65" or 75" television with generous storage on each side.
FAQ
Common Questions
Can a media wall be built in a room narrower than 3 metres?
Yes, but we typically recommend a floating shelf or alcove design rather than a full media wall if the room is narrower than 2.8m, to preserve the sense of space.
Does the media wall need to span the full width of the wall?
No. A media wall can be designed to terminate at a specific width with reveal returns on each side. This can look particularly clean in rooms where the full wall width is unusually large.
What ceiling height is needed for a comfortable floor-to-ceiling media wall?
Minimum 2.35m, ideally 2.5m or above. At lower ceiling heights we typically recommend floating lower cabinets with open shelving above rather than a full-height unit.
