How to Prepare Your Bedroom Floor and Walls Before Wardrobe Installation
Proper preparation before your fitted wardrobe installation starts reduces on-site installation time, improves the quality of the finished result, and prevents delays on the day. Most preparation tasks are straightforward and can be completed by the homeowner without professional help.
What Needs to Be Done Before Installation Day
The room should be clear of furniture and personal belongings in the wardrobe zone — we cannot work around a bed that cannot be moved. Skirting boards in the wardrobe zone are removed before we arrive if the design requires the wardrobe to sit flush to the wall; we include this in the build if not already done. Any decorating — painting walls, replacing carpet — should be completed before the wardrobe is installed, except for the final snagging coat on the wardrobe reveal returns, which we apply after installation.

Floor Levelling and Wall Checking
We check floor level and wall plumb at the measuring visit. If the floor deviates by more than 8mm over the wardrobe run, we build a levelling plinth or wedge the carcass base to compensate. We confirm what action is needed at the measuring visit. For new-builds in Bracknell and Wokingham, floors are typically within tolerance. For period properties in Windsor, Reading, and Maidenhead, floors frequently require some levelling intervention — this is standard practice and is included in our quote.
FAQ
Common Questions
Do I need to remove skirting boards before you arrive?
Only if you prefer — we can remove and re-fit skirting as part of the installation. We will confirm at the measuring visit whether skirting removal is required for your specific design.
Can carpet remain under the wardrobe?
In most cases, yes — we fix through the carpet to the floor below. However, a wardrobe installed on carpet will always carry a slightly less premium result than one installed after the carpet has been cut back to the wardrobe line.
What should I tell you about the walls before the measuring visit?
Let us know if you know of any pipes, cables, or gas meters behind the wall surface. We also test wall construction (stud or masonry) at the measuring visit to confirm fixing method.
