How We Build Floor-to-Ceiling Wardrobes Around Awkward Bedroom Alcoves
The bedroom alcove — particularly in Victorian and Edwardian Berkshire properties — is the natural location for a fitted wardrobe. Building floor-to-ceiling in an alcove maximises every centimetre of available space and produces a result that looks purpose-built rather than inserted.
Scribing and Fitting to Uneven Alcove Walls
Period alcoves have walls that are rarely plumb, floors that are rarely level, and ceiling corners that are rarely square. Each of these deviations must be absorbed by scribing — trimming the panels of the unit to the exact profile of the surfaces they meet. The side panel of a wardrobe built into a Victorian alcove in Windsor or Reading is virtually never a straight cut — it follows the bow and lean of the plaster wall. This is standard bespoke carpentry practice but entirely beyond the capability of flat-pack assembly.

Maximising Every Millimetre of Alcove Depth
Standard alcove depth in Victorian properties is typically 300–450mm — shallower than an ideal wardrobe depth of 580–600mm. Where the alcove depth is sufficient (450mm or above), we build full-depth carcasses. Where the alcove is shallower, the unit depth is matched to the available space and the internal layout adjusted accordingly: double-hung hanging on shorter rails, pull-out shoe drawers of reduced depth, and adjustable shelving throughout.
FAQ
Common Questions
Can a wardrobe be built across a full chimney breast alcove wall including the breast itself?
Yes — the chimney breast projection is incorporated by stepping the unit depth, or by using the breast face as a fixed middle panel. Both approaches produce clean results.
What is the minimum alcove depth for a useful fitted wardrobe?
A minimum of 350mm provides enough depth for a shallow shelf-and-hanging configuration. Below 350mm, built-in shelving or a reduced-depth media unit is more appropriate than a wardrobe.
Do you work in Reading, Windsor, and Maidenhead alcove bedrooms regularly?
Yes — these are among the most common enquiries we receive. Victorian and Edwardian alcove wardrobes are a significant part of our work across the SL and RG postcodes.
