Designing Custom Window Seats with Built-In Storage for Bay Windows
Bay windows are one of the defining architectural features of Victorian and Edwardian Berkshire homes — and in their standard unimproved state, they are also one of the most underused spaces. A bespoke window seat with integrated storage converts the bay from a draughty, difficult corner into the most desirable spot in the room.
Seat Height, Depth, and Cushion Specification
A window seat height of 430–450mm from floor level creates a comfortable sitting height that also allows standard-height side tables to be placed alongside. Seat depth should be a minimum of 450mm — ideally 550mm or more if the bay depth allows, as this permits lying along the seat for reading. The cushion thickness is typically 80–100mm of high-density foam with a removable cover — either fixed to the seat top or a loose fitted cushion. The seat top is typically hinged on a piano hinge for top-access storage if drawers are not specified.

Built-In Storage in the Bay Window Zone
The zone under the window seat and the flanking areas either side of the seat (where the bay wall turns at angle) provide excellent storage opportunities. Pull-out drawers under the seat are the most practical approach — they avoid the bending required for top-access. The flanking zones can house open bookshelves, closed cupboards, or, in a larger bay, a narrow desk that tucks under the side window with the window seat as a companion reading space.
FAQ
Common Questions
Does a bay window seat require any structural work to the bay?
No — the seat is freestanding within the bay and does not require any structural modification to the window or surrounding walls.
Can a radiator remain under a bay window if a seat is installed?
Yes — the seat front panel is designed with ventilation grilles to allow heat from the radiator below to enter the room. This is standard practice in bay window seat installations.
What is the cost of a bespoke bay window seat with storage in Berkshire?
A standard bay window seat with two pull-out drawers and painted finish typically costs £1,200–£2,200 installed depending on bay size and specification.
